LA-MN Presents “Coal Plant Retirement and Consumer Protection”
Lutheran Advocacy-Minnesota will present a webinar titled “Coal Plant Retirement and Consumer Protection” tomorrow, Tuesday, April 19th, at noon with Bret Pence, our colleague from Minnesota Interfaith Power & Light.
Minnesota utilities need to close coal-fired power plants because they are costly, dirty, and a major contributor to climate change. Unfortunately, utilities that still have outstanding debt on a plant often choose to charge their customers higher rates in order to make a larger profit for their shareholders as well as pay off the remaining debt. Several states are deploying a useful tool to address this problem called “securitization.” It’s like refinancing a home to take advantage of lower interest rates, and it sets the stage for a rare win-win-win for customers as well as worker retraining and assistance.
Join us to learn more about coal plant closures, this "securitization" tool, and the legislation which supports it that could make a significant difference for Minnesota in the transition to a clean energy economy!
Here is the Zoom link for the event. If you need any technical assistance, please email rachel.wyffels@elca.org. We look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Tammy & Rachel
